Brought Together by Great Courses

We first met through a friendly discussion of our art, on a dating site.

But we were romantically brought together by a series of small things — seemingly minor commonalities — that were too frequent, made too much sense. There had to be more to it.

Then we discovered our mutual love of learning, through a casual mention of The Great Courses, a service that lets you watch advanced university lectures…for fun.

Love seldom haunts the breast where learning lies, And Venus sets ere Mercury can rise.
— Alexander Pope, “The Wife of Bath her Prologue, from Chaucer”

Thank You

We also share a love of many of the same recording acts, despite our eclectic musical tastes. Once, we each made a list of our favorite bands, and then created a playlist out of the bands that intersected both lists. It was named Kaz♥Rhonda, as a fun reference to the streaming music service iHeartRadio. This website is named after that playlist.

She’s Silly, He’s Goofy

I keep telling Rhonda she should dye her hair an interesting color, like Mrs. Slokombe in the wonderful Britcom Are You Being Served. Eventually, Rhonda claimed to be going to the hair stylist to get her hair dyed purple. She then sent this pic, which I instantly identified as a wig. Apparently this spoiled a month of planning!

Okay, Match.com, You Win

One of us had been searching for love for what seemed like an eternity. He used OKCupid, Bumble, Plenty of Fish, almost everything…but he didn’t trust match.com, which seemed overpriced and primitive, more like one of the pre-smartphone dating sites that reminded one of matchmaking services around before the Internet.

But he decided, after it worked for several people he knew, to give up and give it a shot…right at the moment where the other began to look at all, and joined match. Thank you, synergy of the universe.

Thou wouldst be loved? — then let thy heart From its present pathway part not! Being everything which now thou art, Be nothing which thou art not. So with the world thy gentle ways, Thy grace, thy more than beauty, Shall be an endless theme of praise, And love — a simple duty. — Edgar Allan Poe

Artistic Synergy, Analytic Symphony

All through our lives, we each make the other better. What we do together is greater than the sum of our parts.

When we have each other, our weaknesses become strengths, our pain becomes joy, our lives are enriched beyond our best dreams from our loneliest moments.

Truth is cosmically total: synergetic. Verities are generalized principles stated in semimetaphorical terms. Verities are differentiable. But love is omniembracing, omnicoherent, and omni-inclusive, with no exceptions. Love, like synergetics, is nondifferentiable, i.e., is integral. — Buckminster Fuller, Synergetics
